My mother intended to continue working after she had me in 1961, but could afford not to, and didn't return to work after all. She only took occasional part-time jobs -- a man would come and install a typewriter in our back room.
Anyway, a huge percentage of the men (in their 20s in the 80s) were not working jobs that would allow the woman to stay at home if she had a baby. I dated a guy from a wealthy family who was DELIVERING PIZZAS. Another was a freelance graphic designer who was barely making it. The guy I wound up marrying worked as a BOUNCER and GALLERY ASSISTANT. These were not lucrative jobs. I couldn't imagine taking time off from work to have children, and wound up childless.
That said, the decline in birth rate, in my analysis, is strongly correlated to the narrative that women should work and should pursue a career. It convinces women that they MUST support themselves, which in turn makes feeling comfortable with not working pretty much impossible. A large percentage of my female friends and colleagues who are in their 60s now are childless.
